The Tactile Element of Design
Textures can be rough, smooth, prickly, shiny, fuzzy, or soft. The surface quality of design engages and stimulates our visual and physical senses. An object may look hard but be soft to the touch. Texture creates pattern and contrast, and it enhances the feel of the environment.
In design, texture is used to make spaces feel natural & familiar; hospitable & welcoming; or sterile & clean. Our innate response when we see something is to touch it. Human discovery of an object is very tactile. Our environment should make us want to explore and discover.
